Arachne.com: Greek spider name sold to Conair entrepreneur

Arachne is a figure from Greek mythology known for her skill in weaving. Her tale talks about her ultimate transformation to a spider, the Greek name’s meaning.

The matching .com domain, Arachne.com, was registered in early 1995, at time when all .com registrations were free.

Its registrant, Elizabeth Stokes, formed Arachne Software during the time that she worked for Panix, the oldest commercial internet provider in New York.

Ms. Stokes kept the domain for almost 30 years, updating it very sparsely through the years. Eventually, someone reached out with an offer she could not resist, acquiring the domain Arachne.com in 2023, as seen from historic WHOIS records, courtesy of DomainTools.

That someone was Leandro Rizzuto’s granddaughter, Sophia Wojczak, who worked at Conair—the company her grandfather founded—launching the Leandro line of hair tools in 2019.

Her own business was launched in 2023 as Arachne LLC. Ms. Wojczak proceeded to acquire the exact match .com domain of her venture—a masterful move.

While there is no record of how much she spent on the domain’s acquisition, owning it as a is direct match of her corporate brand is priceless.
