Coinbook.com re-auction: Domain closes at $19,077 but saga is far from over

Coinbook was operated by a Utah-based cryptocurrency exchange founded by Calvin Weight in 2017, positioned as a US regulated fiat-to-crypto platform. The company promoted compliance-centric messaging, USD trading pairs, and even partnered with BLOCK 30 Financial to offer index-style ETX products.

Despite its early ambitions, the business ultimately ceased operations and allowed its flagship domain, Coinbook.com, to lapse.

The domain had been acquired for $20,000 dollars in 2017 using Uniregistry. Upon expiry, Coinbook.com was auctioned at Dynadot, retaining its original registration date (2000.)

That auction ended at $33,000 dollars, with Rick Schwartz participating; the winner failed to pay. Dynadot, at that point, offered the domain to the 2nd highest bidder, Rick Schwartz, but without first eliminating all other bids placed by the deadbeat winner. Clearly, that would not be fair for anyone willing to pay up for an expired domain.

Rick became extremely upset, and rightfully so, turning up the heat with Dynadot whose CEO was attending NamesCon in Miami at the time. Subsequent communications did not seem to diminish the Domain King’s wrath, who stated that he had retained a lawyer.

Per Dynadot’s promise, the domain Coinbook.com was then re-auctioned, closing yesterday at $19,077.65 dollars. It is not clear if the auction’s winner has paid yet.

The saga continues, as far as Rick Schwartz is concerned:

And to be fair, @dynatodd and I had a cordial conversation on Friday. But unfortunately, we weren’t able to find a resolution.

That’s why the first auction wasn’t fair to me. And that’s why the second auction was even less fair to me.

And no… it certainly doesn’t sit well with me!

Where does it go from here?
That remains to be seen.

So buckle up. It ain’t over until the fat lady sings!
