Dot .EU turns 19: Still Europe’s digital home base

The .eu TLD marks 19 years today. With 3.7 million domain registrations since its launch in 2006, it’s now a key part of Europe’s online identity, particularly in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and France.

Operated by EURid, which recently secured a new contract from the European Commission through 2027, .eu has focused on three things: security, inclusivity, and trust.

Since 2021, any EU or European Economic Area (EEA) citizen can register a .eu domain, no matter where they live. EURid also manages Cyrillic (.ею) and Greek (.ευ) domains, letting users register names entirely in their native scripts.

EURid isn’t just about domains: it’s also EMAS-certified for sustainable operations and works with Europol and EUIPO to fight cybercrime and protect IP rights. As .eu heads into its 20th year, it remains Europe’s digital home base: secure, multilingual, and ready for what’s next.
