Shaadi.com: Indian dating company spent all its money to acquire domain

Shaadi is an Indian match-making and matrimony services company, operating from the matching domain, Shaadi.com.

Registered in 1996, the domain was acquired in the late 1990s by its founder and CEO Anupam Mittal. The price was approximately $25,000 dollars.

Shaadi means wedding or marriage in Indian English speak.

In a recent interview, Mr. Mittal disclosed that although the company had $30,000 dollars in its account at the time, he made the bold decision to invest in the domain, as he was confident it would yield better results in the long run. The company initially operated under the domain Sagaai.com before transitioning to Shaadi.com.

Said the Shaadi CEO:

“We had saved about $30,000 dollars in our company. We were getting Shaadi, com domain for about $25,000. $25,000 or $30,000 seemed exorbitant but I believed that without a domain that can become ubiquitous, that can become known for the category, it’ll be tough and this will make our lives easier. So we used all our money.”

Anupam Mittal’s net worth is estimated at $2.2 billion dollars.
