The IOC approves Olympic Esports Games; will domain investors violate the trademark?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made history today, approving the creation of Olympic Sports Games.

The first games will take place in Saudi Arabia in 2025, setting the foundation for a new era in game competition.

Also known as eGames, the most popular Esports in the world include titles from various game genres, including first-person shooters (FPS), multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA), real-time strategy (RTS), and sports simulation games.

Some top Esports known for their competitive scenes include:

  • League of Legends (LoL)
  • Dota 2
  • CounterStrike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)
  • Fortnite
  • Overwatch
  • Call of Duty
  • Valorant
  • Rocket League
  • StarCraft II
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds)
  • FIFA

It is not yet know which of these will become Olympic Esports Games but one thing is certain: many domain investors will be tempted to register domain names that contain the world famous “Olympic” trademark.

Already, the exact match domain OlympicEsportsGames.com has been registered to a Chinese registrant since 2023, while the matching .org is peddled for sale on Dan.com for $19,998 dollars.

Meanwhile, the domain OlympicEsports.Games has been registered using the Com Laude registrar, known for its support to corporations’ registrations of trademark-related domains. It is almost certain that the domain was registered by the Switzerland-based IOC in 2023.

The International Olympic Committee has been known to be extremely protective of its mark and has filed numerous UDRPs over the years, losing only one.
