On August 24, 2005, Alex Tew, a student from the UK, registered MillionDollarHomepage.com and, within two days, launched the pixel-selling experiment that would capture the internet’s imagination.
Tew’s 1,000 x 1,000 pixel grid offered advertising slots at $1 each, and the idea went viral almost instantly. In just 138 days, every pixel was sold, earning him over $1 million before taxes.

Today, two decades later, Tew is best known as the co-founder of Calm.com, one of the world’s most popular meditation and wellness apps.
The Million Dollar Homepage remains online as a snapshot of early web culture, with many original advertisers long gone or their links redirecting to parked domains, while a surprising number still remain.
The project’s simple brilliance inspired countless imitators, but none have ever replicated its success or cultural impact. We were here for the 10th anniversary as well! 🙂
Happy 20th anniversary, Million Dollar Homepage!
