Verisign released the Domain Name Industry Brief (DNIB) covering the Q2/2025 period.
The domain name industry closed the second quarter of 2025 on a positive note, hitting 371.7 million domain registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs). This marks a net growth of 3.3 million domains (0.9%) compared to Q1 2025 and a year-over-year increase of 9.3 million domains (2.6%).
COM and NET hold steady:
The combined .com and .net base reached 170.5 million registrations by the end of Q2 2025—up 0.7 million domains (0.4%) from Q1. However, on a year-over-year basis, this pair saw a slight dip of 0.1 million domains (0.1%). Breaking it down:
- .com closed June with 157.9 million domains
- .net followed with 12.6 million domains
New .com and .net registrations totaled 10.4 million in Q2 2025, a healthy jump from 9.2 million during the same quarter last year. The preliminary renewal rate for these TLDs landed at 75.5% for the quarter.
ccTLDs continue to grow:
Country code TLDs (ccTLDs) also added momentum, reaching 143.4 million registrations by the end of Q2—an increase of 0.5 million domains (0.4%) from Q1 and 3.5 million (2.5%) year over year.
