In December we noted that DomainNameSales.com, the legendary domain that predated Frank Schilling‘s Uniregistry, was being forwarded to GoDaddy Auctions “beta.”
After Uniregistry’s acquisition by GoDaddy, the domain displayed a basic landing page for a few years, designating it as yet another GoDaddy project; since late 2024 the domain of “Domain Name Sales” has been utilized as a URL forwarder.
There’s something very interesting, however, in how that URL forward takes place. It’s not a simple 301 redirect—a permanent redirect—but a double one.
That’s right: DomainNameSales.com forwards to another GoDaddy-owned domain, NameFind.com, which in turn forwards (via a 301 redirect) to GoDaddy Auctions.
Here’s the proof, courtesy of WhereGoes.com:

It’s the ultimate domain version of a game of Tag. 😀
It adds a few milliseconds to the final destination and it’s a practice frowned upon by Google; while Google does not necessarily penalize a web site for having two subsequent domain redirects, it is considered bad practice because it can negatively affect site performance, user experience, and SEO.
Then again, GoDaddy does a redirect to your Afternic-listed domains, de-indexing them from Google, so what’s new?
