A distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) targeting DNS provider Dyn DNS, took offline major services networks.
Twitter, PayPal, Spotify, and many other online providers went fully or partially offline.
WHOIS.DomainTools.com appears to be down for the same reason as well.
The DDos attack affected various locations in the Eastern USA, according to a statement by Dyn:
“Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21st-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.”
While some services have been restored, others still don’t function as expected. For example, Twitter is currently down, and PayPal two factor authentication system is not working.
The most latest updates from Dyn state the following:
“Our engineers are continuing to investigate and mitigate several attacks aimed against the Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure.”
Cybercriminals often target DNS providers with DDoS attacks to overwhelm information or services networks.
