Internet of Things : Home appliances conspiring to take over your bank account

The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of billions of interconnected devices that we’re normally not accustomed to viewing them as networked.

It’s the new, expanded reality that grants networking access to home appliances such as refrigerators, coffee machines, temperature monitors and many others.

While all this seems to be a convenience that gives us the luxury of controlling our very environment, it also creates many problems due to an inherent lack of security and data encryption.

The recent massive Distributed Denial of Service attack that brought many online services down, was orchestrated by commanding thousands of such IoT devices, in a botnet that assaulted its targets.

An army of digital zombies, if you may, from home cameras to temperature regulators, to unlocked routers and other such “servants” that are supposed to work for our convenience.

In a recent comic addressing this issue, The Joy of Tech by GeekCulture portrayed the ominous reality of the Internet of Ransomware Things.
