The cybercriminals behind the WannaCry ransomware attack have already made a small fortune in Bitcoin.
Once security analysts reverse-engineered the WannaCry code, the following Bitcoin address was revealed: 115p7UMMngoj1pMvkpHijcRdfJNXj6LrLn
So far, that address has received 30 payments from victims whose computer files were encrypted, and succumbed to this type of digital blackmail.
According to Blockchain.info, that address is now up to 3.64134512 BTC, or approximately $6,358 USD – all thanks to a recent surge in Bitcoin prices.
The timing of the BTC price increase and the launch of malware demanding payments in Bitcoin cannot be coincidental.
This is exactly the type of Bitcoin use that has given it a bad name, and a reputation as a tool of fund laundering among cybercriminals.
