Less is more, the ancient Greeks said, with the phrase “Ουκ εν τω πολλώ το ευ.”
That last word, “ευ” means “good” and the exact translation is “no good is found in many.”
EURid, operators of the dot .EU TLD for European countries, are now releasing the Greek letter version, dot .ευ (.ΕΥ in capital letters.)
Is this extension really necessary?
In our educated opinion, low adoption rates of .EU domains among the Greek user base, indicate that the new, Hellenized TLD will not find much adoption either.
Greeks go after .GR domain names, often neglecting the registration of the matching .com domain altogether.
EURid appears to be optimistic:
” ‘The .eu in Greek will enable end-users to enjoy the full Internationalised Domain Names experience in Greek, as Greek domain names will be registered under the Greek extension. We worked hard to have the .eu in Greek delegated with ICANN/IANA and we are grateful to our industry peers who supported us throughout a process that has lasted a decade. We are delighted to add the Greek extension to the list of features for our registrars and registrants’ – Giovanni Seppia, EURid External Relations Manager.“
