Greek Yahoo gets on with the times, finally

While Google opts to serve the exact same front-end in every country, Yahoo has always displayed  a portal customized for each country.

Yahoo is – after all – the older of the two major search engines and opted from early on to serve news and information – like an online magazine of sorts.

After launching the “Greek Yahoo” in 1998, the portal remained virtually unchanged for the next 12 years, unlike its big daddy Yahoo.com

Amazing as it is, time stood still in the land of lore and glory and while Greeks nowadays enjoy Internet speeds matching those of the rest of Europe, Yahoo.gr remained unchanged.

When we say “unchanged” we mean that not a single pixel was moved since 1998. Sort of.

But as of today, Yahoo.gr is finally the type of online search engine and portal that carries several newsfeeds and content customized to the online habits of the news-hungry Greek surfers.

Yahoo.gr is now positioned #6 among the top Internet destinations from within Greece, according to Alexa.

Hopefully the next Greek Yahoo update won’t take yet another decade to be implemented!
