Asking questions after the new Afternic/Dan/Uniregistry fee changes

The “price alignment” that GoDaddy is rolling out across its marketplaces has created a shock and awe effect among domain investors.

Increasing Dan.com commissions to 15% is just the tip of the iceberg, as the Afternic.com supposed drop from 20% to 15% isn’t a reduction of fees; Afternic drops its tiered pricing altogether:

In the past, a domain sold for $100,000 dollars on Afternic would cost $11,500 dollars in fees ($4,000 +10% of amount over $25k). From February 1st it would cost $15,000 dollars in Afternic fees (flat fee of 15%.)

There are many questions waiting to be answered. After feeding the emails from GoDaddy to popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, we asked it to ask questions and this is what it came up with:

  • What is the purpose of the new commission structure being implemented by Dan and GoDaddy?
  • How does the new commission structure compare to the one previously in place?
  • How does the new commission structure compare to the one currently used by Afternic?
  • How will the new commission structure impact sellers who sell a significant portion of their domains on Dan and Afternic?
  • Is the 5% commission rate for importing one’s own leads remaining the same under the new commission structure?
  • How does using the For Sale Lander options and opting into Afternic’s Distribution network benefit sellers in terms of the commission rate?
  • What value does Dan offer to its customers that is reflected in the new commission structure?
  • How will the new commission structure impact the average seller who sells 40% of their domains on Dan and 60% on Afternic?

It would be great if GoDaddy representatives answered these fine questions about the fee increase schedule!

Hello friend, you missed something in your article, did you read well the message from Afternic (Godaddy). This change is also to force, or force domain investors (sellers) to point nameservers to afternic, if a domain is listed on afternic and the domain does not point to afternic servers, they will charge 25%.

    Hi Theo & ChatGPT,
I appreciate the questions! ChatGPT gives some interesting answers if you plug those questions in to it 🙂

The majority of questions raised are covered between the email announcements and the blog posts:

James – There is no FAQ for lots and lots of questions, many of which popped up at NamePros. The “price alignment” email salvo sent out by Afternic, Uniregistry, and Dan is just a method of announcing the price increases, with less than 30 days of a heads up.

Since I have your attention, tell us about LTO rate changes at Dan please.

Why does GD has to make it so complicated? GD wants to make it complicated on purpose is to screw everyone up.

Just make it a flat 10% and be done!!
Just like taxes, make it a flat tax 10%

Thanks Theo. I’m doing my best to answer questions sent to me. I’m happy to chat to anyone over email – jiles@godaddy.com – about this.

Regarding the LTO rate changes, they are subject to the same 15%/25%. Existing LTO deals are unaffected.
