Microsoft announced today that it has taken down Trickbot, a malware-spreading network by turning off its servers’ IP range.
The Trickbot network had the potential to disrupt the ongoing US elections, and Microsoft obtained a federal court order which was relayed to various Internet Service Providers in the US.
“We disrupted Trickbot through a court order we obtained as well as technical action we executed in partnership with telecommunications providers around the world. We have now cut off key infrastructure so those operating Trickbot will no longer be able to initiate new infections or activate ransomware already dropped into computer systems.”
Trickbot has also been used to spread false and malicious emails containing malware that attempted to lure victims in by referencing Black Lives Matter and Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the domain name Trickbot.com is up for sale at HugeDomains, with an asking price of $3,195 dollars. Obviously, the domain is not related to the codename of the malware network, but the name choice is unfortunate.
