Pig butchering is a scam, typically a long con, that combines romance, investment fraud, and cryptocurrency.
Originating in China, the term comes from the Chinese phrase for “pig-butchering plate” where the “pig” (the victim) is “fattened up” with affection and trust before being “slaughtered” (financially drained).
A recent seizure by the US Secret Service in the Northern District of New York led to the control of a ‘Uni’ domain, NFT-Uni.com.
That domain, along with previously seized okex-nft.net, was used in a pig butchering scheme that defrauded a victim who lost approximately $172,405.61 dollars. Other victims of the NFT-UNI.com fraud reported approximately $4,564,936.47 in losses.
US Attorney John A. Sarcone III said:
“By seizing this website, we are able to strike a blow to a criminal organization that financially victimized numerous individuals, including a member of our community and senior citizens around the country.”
