Escrow.com applies for trademark registration at the #USPTO

Escrow heavyweight, Escrow.com, has applied for the trademark registration of its domain name, ESCROW.COM, at the USPTO.

Note: Escrow.com is a premium sponsor of DomainGang.

The application is for a standard character mark, citing date of first use in 1999 for the following services:

“The provision of online payments services; maintaining accounts as a third party for sale or exchange of property between involved parties; maintaining accounts as a third party for sale or exchange of services between involved parties”

The stylized version of the Escrow.com mark, containing a logo, was registered in 2013 but it lapsed in July of this year, due to not filing an acceptable declaration under Section 8. Trademarks need to update their statement of use.

Regardless, this is an opportunity to lock down the ESCROW.COM mark, following a current trend after the SCOTUS decision on the Booking.com case.

I guess i don’t understand the basis for filing a trademark for a .com name. Like what am I preventing? I have 3 exact match domain names thats considerably valuable and as i was thinking about joining this wave of .com trademarks…i just don’t understand the purpose.
