Italian tech firm Bending Spoons is set to acquire AOL from Apollo Global Management, marking yet another chapter in the storied journey of the internet pioneer.
According to Variety, the $1.5 billion deal will be financed through $2.8 billion in secured debt, signaling the company’s aggressive expansion strategy.
Bending Spoons, already known for owning Evernote and the AI-powered photo enhancer Remini, continues to position itself as a rising force in the global tech arena.

By taking over AOL, a brand that once defined how millions first experienced the internet, the Milan-based company is extending its reach into the world of established digital legacies, aiming to breathe new life into an iconic name from the web’s early days.
AOL defined an era of the internet. Before social media feeds and high-speed broadband, millions of people first logged on through America Online; the friendly portal that made “You’ve got mail!” a cultural phenomenon.
Originally founded in 1985 as Quantum Computer Services and rebranded as AOL in 1989, the company rose to dominance throughout the 1990s, becoming the largest internet provider in the U.S. Those shiny CDs offering free hours of dial-up access were impossible to escape.
AOL wasn’t just a connection — it was a digital world of its own, complete with chat rooms, AOL Mail, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), and a bustling news and entertainment portal.
Not too long ago, AOL retired its dial-up service, so this is great news! 😀
