AzureEdge.net: Microsoft domain’s function in limbo after CDN collapse

CDN provider, Edgio, is bankrupt and in imminent shutdown; select assets of the company were acquired by Akamai, another CDN provider.

The news is bad for .NET developers, a Microsoft technology, who have been deploying code via the domain name AzureEdge.net which is hosted on Edgio.

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform that offers a variety of services for building, running, and managing applications.

So what’s going on?

While the domain AzureEdge.net is under Microsoft’s control “forever” the company has declined to move its hosted functions elsewhere. Let’s get this straight: Microsoft gets to keep the domain but its functions will be obsolete, due to lack of hosting.

Instead, Microsoft is advising developers to move their code’s dependencies away from dotnetcli.azureedge.net and dotnetbuilds.azureedge.net.

Typically issues arise when domain names expire and drop; in this case it’s some funky policy by Microsoft that will be causing issues.
