Parents: Get your baby’s domain early on, registering it in .com, preferably.
By registering the baby’s full name, such as JenniePappas.com or JoseJohnson.com you’re setting them up for the future.
It doesn’t matter whether these babies will grow up to become politicians, musicians, athletes or store managers – they need to be represented via a domain name, and their matching .com is the top option.
But not everyone seems to agree.
A commentator to a Lifehacker article advising parents to register their baby’s domain and renew it annually, calls it “a waste of money.” The comment also seems to believe that those who become store managers don’t need a domain!
This seems like an odd way to waste money. What happens when your child grows up to be a store manager and they have absolutely no use for the domain name you’ve been paying for their whole life? Or perhaps they do develop a career that requires self-promotion online, who’s to say they won’t have a company name or alais they’d prefer to use for that? (how many instagram and tik tok stars use their full given name on their platforms?)
The argument is full of ignorance, as professionals of any type should have equal rights to a domain name that represents them best: their given name at birth.
As far as social media goes, there is absolutely no guarantee that the social medium of choice will be around indefinitely; when the platform is free to use, you are the product. Never allow your personal brand depend on someone else’s platform.
Other comments are equally debating the necessity for a domain name:
And when it doesn’t get used because they have no desire to have a website dedicated to themselves (especially if it’s not a professional work related website)? How is this seen as a good investment??
