Domain impact: WordPress introduces 100-year domain registrations as asteroid approaches

The domain registrar arm of WordPress now offers 100-year domain registrations, ensuring digital presence for a full century.

The announcement comes as astronomers track asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a chance of impacting earth sometime in late 2032—that’s in 7 years from now.

By extending registrations well beyond a domain investor’s or end-user registrant’s typical lifespan, WordPress supports brands and entrepreneurs planning for the future, no matter how long that may last.

“Domains define digital identity,” said Matt U. Salla, WordPress spokesperson. “A 100-year domain registration ensures websites endure trends, business cycles, major planetary disruptions—even a second Trump presidency.”

NASA monitors 2024 YR4 as it nears earth; while impact odds remain low, scientists acknowledge uncertainties in orbital calculations. Renewing domain names past 2032 might seem like a waste of money at first glance.

Some experts disagree.

Media Options founder, Drew Rosener, commented:

“A smart investment, let me tell you. The only question is whether DNS will function after the impact. But for those betting on humanity’s resilience, 100 years is a solid play. I plan to live to 125 or longer and need my domains to last at least as long!”

WordPress confirmed it will honor 100-year domain renewals through an asteroid impact, as long as the internet and electricity remain operational. For more information, visit 100YearDomains.com.
