In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they are stepping back from royal duties prior to their move to the United States.
A year prior, they established the SussexRoyal foundation, operating from the domain names SussexRoyal.co.uk and SussexRoyal.com.
As of yesterday, the ex-royals moved to the shorter, sexier Sussex.com. Registered way back in 1995, the domain name appears to have been acquired from its previous registrant, Maryland-based Four Gates LLC, some time in 2023. It was moved to British nameservers just two days ago, being launched officially today.
According to the Daily Mail, “Prince Harry and Meghan’s new website using their Sussex titles is a betrayal of their agreement with the late Queen Elizabeth.”
The British tabloid notes that the royal row centers around the Duke and Duchess’s decision to replace their Archewell website—the umbrella name for all their philanthropic and business endeavors—with the domain name Sussex.com, thus coming “perilously close” to using their royal status for commercial gain.
From a branding standpoint, Sussex.com is the absolute gem in the ex-royal crown of Prince Harry and Meghan. It’s a splendid decision that anyone, whether of a royal bloodline or not, should strive to achieve! 🙂
