Dot .dot: The one-domain gTLD no one knows about!

The new TLDs, often referred to as new gTLDs are domain extensions introduced beyond the traditional ones such as .com, .net, and .org.

ICANN launched the New gTLD Program in 2012 to expand available domain name options. Since then, hundreds of new gTLDs were taken live and 1,111 such TLDs are still active, according to ntldstats.

But did you know that there is even a .dot TLD?

Pronounced dot dot apparently, this TLD has just one active domain, the one required by its Registry: nic.dot.

Dish LLC is the .dot Registry and that’s what we get from clicking on the sole .dot domain above. Here’s the summary:

DOT is a closed, restricted Top Level Domain (“TLD”). Only DISH DBS Corporation and its Affiliates are eligible to register a Domain Name under the DOT TLD. If a Registrant ceases to be eligible for a .DOT Domain Name at any time in the future, the Registry may cancel or suspend the Registrant’s license to use the Domain Name immediately.

Dot dot sounds catchy and there is no information why there are no active registrations for this gTLD! Such domains could complicate the so-called “radio test” by a factor of ten!
