GoDaddy has changed its domain transfer process, making it a cinch to move your domains to another registrar.
Transferring domains away from GoDaddy has always been a complex, multi-point ordeal. One had to unlock the domain, then remove the WHOIS privacy, then request the authorization code. Each step had to complete first before going to the next one—nothing worked asynchronously.
At some point, transfer away of domains valued internally by the GoDaddy tool to be worth at least $5,000 dollars had to go through a manual process. In that case, a transfer out that should take a few minutes would take—by force—five to seven days.
All this has changed fairly recently and while we didn’t see any announcement by GoDaddy, it’s a great change that must be documented.
To transfer a domain away from GoDaddy, click on it to manage it. Then scroll down to this:
Instead of unlocking the domain, click on the “Transfer to Another Registrar” option. You will then be taken to the following page:
The new process combines the removal of the WHOIS privacy and the unlocking of the domain for transfer out, once you click on the “Continue” button. The end result is below:
Using the authorization code you can then initiate the transfer at your registrar of choice. Once they process your request, your GoDaddy account, under Transfers, will display the domain. Select it and approve the transfer which then takes minutes to complete.
