ICANN released a short paper with notes about the next round of new gTLD applications.
Titled, “ICANN Org’s Readiness to Support Future Rounds of New gTLDs,” the paper arrived right before the organization’s 65th meeting in Marrakech, Morocco, from June 24th-27th.
The document anticipates 2,000 new gTLD applications for its next round, with a limit of 1,000 per year. These numbers are on par with the previous round that started in 2012.
While no specific date is defined, it’s expected sometime after 2020. ICANN hopes to shorten the time it takes to process and approve each new application.

The ICANN paper is a draft for discussion and it only provides a skeleton for the expected timeline.
