India’s .in versus Pakistan’s .pk—Who wins?

India and Pakistan are two nuclear superpowers in Asia. The countries are populous, ranking 1st and 5th respectively in the world.

One would expect that domain registrations rank proportionally high but that’s not the case.

Data from NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, show that in March 2024 there were 4.07 million .in domains registered. Liberalization of registration policies in 2005 led to a significant increase in domain registrations, including from international entities. In recent months, however, there has been increased pressure to outlaw domain investors in the .in namespace.

Meanwhile, data from Pakistan’s .pk ccTLD is very scant. Zonefile numbers appear inaccurate at a very low 37,488 domains.

We know that number is incorrect as the same source lists .in domain registrations at almost 13% of the official numbers.

Pakistan’s Registry, PKNIC, is a private company based in Lahore, Pakistan. We could not find any official data but based on the skewed numbers it’d appear feasible to estimate .pk registrations at approximately 500,000 domains.

To summarize, India’s .in ccTLD has experienced substantial growth, driven by liberal registration policies, support for multiple languages, and active promotion both domestically and internationally.

In contrast, Pakistan’s .pk ccTLD maintains a more modest presence, with growth primarily centered around local entities and less emphasis on international expansion.

That being said, we’re hopeful that the two countries reach a peaceful resolution for their border disputes and conflicts.
