The registrants of the domain OLA.com seem to have a true gem in their possession.
The aged three letter .com domain was registered in 1995 and for the best part of the past decade it was referenced as an acronym for OnlineAuction.com.
While the latter resolves to a broken page currently, OLA.com displays information about Online America. The matching domain, OnlineAmerica.com, forwards to OLA.com.
Not surprisingly, a new trademark application at the USPTO for OLA.COM is in the works, for the following services:
Online trading services, namely, operating online marketplaces for sellers and buyers of goods and services; online trading services in which sellers post products or services to be offered for sale, and purchasing or bidding is done via the Internet in order to facilitate the sale of goods and services by others via a computer network; providing evaluative feedback and ratings of sellers’ goods and services, the value and prices of sellers’ goods and services, buyers’ and sellers’ performance, delivery, and overall trading experience in connection therewith; providing a searchable online advertising guide featuring the goods and services of online vendors; providing a searchable online evaluation database for buyers and sellers; advertising and advertisement services; providing a directory of third party web sites to facilitate business transactions; arranging and conducting incentive rewards programs to incentivize engagement with a ridesharing platform; membership rewards programs to incentivize engagement with a ridesharing platform
The trademark application has been filed with an “intent to use” clause.
A previous application for OLA.COM that was filed last year was refused for a variety of reasons. Things are changing fast since the SCOTUS decision on Booking.com, and we are witnessing lots of registrants of generic domains and acronyms applying for the matching trademark.
