Public Interest Registry: .ORG has turned 40 years old

The .ORG TLD marked its 40th anniversary today, July 10, 2025.

The first domain registration, Mitre.org, was made in 1985 by MITRE Corporation, a nonprofit technology organization. Since then, .ORG has become the preferred domain extension for mission-driven entities around the world.

More than 11 million .ORG domains are in use, spanning nonprofits, educational institutions, open-source projects, and advocacy groups. The extension is widely recognized as a signal of public interest and non-commercial intent. Of course, anyone can register a .ORG domain, even if they don’t fall into these categories.

Jon Nevett, President and CEO of Public Interest Registry (PIR), which operates .ORG, shared news of the anniversary by highlighting its broader support efforts.

PIR also reinforced its commitment to domain security, pointing to its partnerships and anti-abuse initiatives like NetBeacon and its work with the Internet Watch Foundation to combat online harm.

After four decades, .ORG remains one of the longest-running and most trusted domain spaces on the internet, continuing to serve as the digital infrastructure for organizations working in the public interest.
