It was truly great while it lasted: Screenshots.com, the domain screenshot repository operated by DomainTools, is no longer free for all.
The service went behind the DomainTools paywall yesterday, and although the issue ended there for its users, it also claimed a temporary victim.
NameBio, the popular web site that reports on domain sales, went down crashing, thanks to its database scripts going haywire.
Said Michael Sumner of NameBio:
Sorry about that, Screenshots.com was shut down and our hundreds of thousands of domain details pages were trying to use it. Lots of failed API calls were bogging down our server and it gave up the ghost. Should be stable now that I removed the screenshots but I’m keeping a close eye on it.
We could not find an announcement about Screenshots.com at either the DomainTools blog or their Twitter feed.
That’s too bad. I liked using Screenshots.com on occasion, but not enough to pay for it as a service.
I agree with Adam. It was handy, but I don’t need it so much that I’ll pay for it.
