Theseus.us: Dan sale now drives military drone startup

Theseus (Θησεύς) is a legendary hero from Greek mythology, celebrated for his role in the tale of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. As the son of Aegeus, king of Athens, Theseus was one of 14 young Athenians sent as a tribute to Crete, where they were to be sacrificed to the Minotaur, a monstrous creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull.

The Minotaur lived within the Labyrinth, an intricate maze designed by the master craftsman Daedalus. Theseus vowed to end the suffering by slaying the beast.

In Crete, Theseus received help from Ariadne, Minos’ daughter, who fell in love with him. She provided him with a ball of thread, which he used to navigate the Labyrinth. Theseus tied one end of the thread to the entrance and unspooled it as he ventured deeper into the maze. After a fierce battle, he successfully killed the Minotaur and then followed the thread back to the entrance, leading the others to safety.

It comes as no surprise that US startup Theseus chose this name for its self-navigating drone that uses no GPS signal to find its way around, just like Theseus inside the Labyrinth.

Powered by camera optics and nothing more than Google maps, the Theseus drone prototype was 3D-printed and built with a cost of less than $500 dollars.

The Theseus startup just achieved its first sale to the US military of a drone that does not rely on GPS signals for navigation, making it capable of flying over remote parts of the world using optics.

Theseus operates from the domain name Theseus.us which was only acquired recently. According to WHOIS records, the domain appears to have been sold via Dan.com on or around May 18, 2024.

Originally registered in 2002, the domain name Theseus.us dropped and was re-registered multiple times.

The most recent record of a seller’s expected price was $1,450 dollars from a registration that lapsed; we could expect that the most recent seller had listed the domain for a similar price.
