How many times have you made the mistake of publicly offering to assist someone with their domaining questions – only to start receiving an onslaught of both public and private inquiries for assistance from a mob of people?
The moment that you appear to be handing out advice, assistance, guidance and support to a select few of your choice, that’s the time that the Vampire Domainers appear.
These creatures live off the kindness and support of people like you. They lack personal motivation and want things explained in ultra-fine detail; instead of utilizing your directions and suggestions they are asking for hand-outs, ready-made solutions and pretty much a five-course “dinner served” on their plate.
“I got that email from a person I hardly knew and he was so pushy with his requests about me becoming his mentor in domaining that I wanted to slap him”, says John, a well-known domainer from San Diego. “I don’t mind answering a few questions but man, if one needs a babysitter they have to pay me. I worked hard to become who I am”, he added, visibly frustrated.
Many Vampire Domainers frequent domain forums and PM their victims or ask for their instant messenger info, phone numbers or attempt to add them in Facebook or MySpace. Quite often, their obsessive and annoying behavior is coupled with public acts of affection towards their unsuspected target.
“I’m so done answering questions that lead to more questions which lead to emails and even phonecalls”, says Timothy – an unpaid moderator at a large domain forum. “I have no problem directing people that seem lost, but there are lot of newbs that simply want to remain newbs forever and they never read the freaking manual or do research on their own!”
In the world of domaining, as in every industry, time equals money and when Vampire Domainers attack like leeches, you are bound to lose a lot of both.
The best solution seems to be never to offer your professional advice and assistance for free – except to the select few of your choice.

hey, thanks for the advice! can I have your phone number? I just have one more question for you 🙂
Sure Mike. Make sure you use 1-800-COLLECT 😀
I don’t mind helping people, but as you have explained some would have you do all the work for them. The worst one I encountered was someone who wanted me to cover the up-front cost on a domain and it’s development.
lol
so, so true acro!
“Sure Mike. Make sure you use 1-800-COLLECT”
Lucius,
You should have given him your 900 #.
Patrick – Giovanni operates her own private ‘900’ line for developers.
Jeff – I’m surprised you weren’t asked to provide dinner and lodge as well.
Dental Jobs – Vampires have sharp teeth, you might get them as customers.
“Patrick – Giovanni operates her own private ‘900′ line for developers. ”
LOL. Yeah. It’s 1-800-WRD-PRSS
Can I have your credit card number please…..
BullS – I’ve shredded all of my credit cards, unfortunately 😀 I can offer a piece of gum though.
Learning it from Microsoft tech support…they always ask from your CC first …
I see what your talking about daily. If the advice does not meet the expectations of the requester, suddenly you’re full of BS.
Butt, hats just me.
