Verisign, operators of the .com and .net Registry, are about to share facts and figures for Q2/2020.
The report will be shared tomorrow, July 23rd.
Verisign shared its Domain Name Industry Brief report, stating that domain name registrations increased 4.5 million or 1.2% sequentially to 366.8 million across top-level domains (TLDs) at the end of first-quarter 2020. Domain name registrations increased 14.9 million or 4.2% year over year.
In view of the COVID-19 crisis, Verisign announced on March 25 it’s freezing registry prices for all its Top-Level Domains (TLDs), including .com and .net, through the end of 2020.
VRSN is currently trading at $205 dollars a share.
At the same time, Verisign was awarded a patent utilizing blockchain technology for powering domain names.
The patent enables the use of domain names by registrants, as their blockchain address.
According to Coin Telegraph:
The patented techniques include management of public and private keys through a DNS registry on the blockchain network as well as operating requests for the so-called “proof of registrar” records. The system enables a blockchain network to receive and store the data about the domain name and its connection with an existing blockchain user address for the registrant.
Kudos to Krista Gable for the Verisign patent news.
