Complete guide to the EPP domain codes used by Registrars and Registries

EPP Codes.

What are EPP codes?

Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) domain status codes, also called domain name status codes, indicate the status of a domain name’s registration.

There is at least one active status code at any time for a particular domain, but there can also be more than one.

EPP status codes come in two flavors, client and server codes.

Client status codes are set by the Registrars.

Some registrars automatically enable certain EPP codes, e.g. when you register a domain name, while others do so when it’s requested.

Server status codes are set by the Registries, and they take precedence over client codes.

Both types of EPP codes appear when a WHOIS lookup is performed.
