Things are beginning to heat up, after the announcement by ICANN that the US government is relinquishing control over IANA and ICANN.
A new petition at WhiteHouse.gov attempts to gather enough signatures, in order to petition the Obama administration on the matter.
The title of the petition is “Retain the United States control over ICANN.”
“According to reports, “U.S. officials announced plans Friday [March 14, 2014] to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move that … alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.”
This move poses various risks such as losing the Freedom of Speech protections. It is likely that certain specific countries, such as possibly China, would try to take over control of the Internet as a result.
Therefore, the U.S. should _not_ give up the control of ICANN and other aspects of the Internet. The U.S. should retain control over any technology assets such as this.”
The petition was created on March 16th, and is classified under Civil Rights and Liberties, Technology and Telecommunications.
To validate this petition, 100k signatures are needed.
