Afternic database allegedly leaked, claims cybersecurity publisher

Update: There is no confirmation that the leaked data set was—as claimed by Brinztech—related to Afternic. Original post follows.

Cyberthreat publication Brinztech reports that a threat actor on a “well-known” cybercrime forum is claiming to sell a leaked database allegedly belonging to Afternic, the GoDaddy-owned premium domain marketplace.

According to Brinztech, the allegedly leaked dataset is described as large and technically detailed, containing typical personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, email addresses, profile photos, and physical addresses, along with hashed account passwords.

The article does not provide any sources about this alleged leak of Afternic information. The only other source we could locate arrives in an X post that predates the Brinztech article by one day:

A member of a #darkweb forum allegedly claims to have #Breached a major domain-market platform — Afternic — stating SQL access and sample data were shared. Allegation unverified. For awareness only.

That source does not identify where this information was posted but they shared a screenshot from that darkweb forum with redacted information:

For domain investors, an alleged leak like this is more than a privacy issue; it’s a direct risk to their domain portfolios. With detailed PII and hashed passwords, attackers can launch targeted phishing and social-engineering attacks, attempt account takeovers at registrars and marketplaces, and even try to hijack or sell valuable domains without authorization.

At this time, questions about the alleged dataset leak containing Afternic data has not been responded to on NamePros.

Update: Paul B. of NamePros says that “the sample shown by the attacker indicates that the data is from animesultra.net and has nothing to do with Afternic.” He has no idea why the Brinztech article would attribute it to Afternic.

There has been no official response from GoDaddy/Afternic at this point.
