Imagine living in a world where there is no information about what is happening outside of your own house.
Things would be confusing to some, then again others might feel blessed in their isolation.
Now juxtaposition that to a larger scale: your building, your neighborhood, your city, your country.
The world.
News is what happens, all the time, to everyone – regardless of location. Yes, that includes things that happen in other galaxies and solar systems.
When we act upon the news by stating what we saw, what we heard, what we read and what we’ve gained – that’s reporting.
A reporter’s primary obligation is to report the news, preferably dry and unadulterated. Of course, news is nowadays the dessert of the media; we *expect* news to be gratifying and pleasant, or even shockingly unpleasant. As in the times of Roman games at the Colosseum, we often declare our thirst for “blood” in the news.
Some people don’t seem to understand that news isn’t created, news happens.
To remove a piece of news after it’s publicized, that’s censorship, especially when it’s 100% accurate. It’s not even about the right to free speech or freedom of the press.
So next time, remember: if it happened, it’s news already. We simply report it.
