New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced the impeding taxation of .nyc domains, as soon as the new TLD is made available to New Yorkers.
Just a day after giving a speech lauding the approval of the .nyc gTLD by ICANN, the billionaire mayor bites hard down on progress with a new “Digital Assets” tax.
“There is no doubt that .nyc domains will be extremely popular, and as a city we want to ensure this popularity is not abused,” said Michael Bloomberg.
“The Digital Assets tax will help provide the city of New York with enough capital to continue the collection of garbage, the effectiveness of the police and firefighters and the improvement of Central Park and 9-11 Ground Zero areas. Paying a variety of taxes is the all-American, patriotic thing to do,” added the NYC mayor.
The new Digital Assets tax will be 1.5% of every domain registration of .nyc domains; registrars will add the fee to the amount they charge consumers, who have the option to pay using Bitcoins. If you are not a resident of New York you might be able to qualify for the non-resident taxation reimbursement initiative (NRTRI). Applications require full disclosure of your residence for the past 12 years.
“We are excited about the expected success of the .nyc gTLD and I’m positive our residents will embrace this as they did in the past with the soft drink limitation statute,” said Michael Bloomberg. “It’s great being a New Yorker, I love this city!” exclaimed the billionaire mayor.
There is no announcement yet from the .nyc Registry regarding the mayor’s latest statements and taxation introduction.
