United Nations official applauds the US government announcement to relinquish Internet control

The global party is already starting with the blessings of the US government; per the ICANN announcement of March 14th, the US will relinquish control of core Internet functions by September 2015.

It feels as if the proverbial rug has been pulled from under the feet of those Americans whose taxes, time, ingenuity and volunteerism was used to establish and expand a well-functioning Internet.

A new announcement, made by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, welcomes the change:

“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of 14 March 2014, concerning its intent to transition key Internet domain name functions to the global multi-stakeholder community.

The Secretary-General takes note of this important development, especially in light of the results of decisions taken at the World Summit on the Information Society that agreed on a multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance. He encourages governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and the Internet technical community to engage in furthering the process to ensure a single, open, free, secure and trustworthy Internet.”

With ICANN 49 opening its gates on March 23rd in Singapore, it is important to pay close attention to the ever-reaching acts of ‘globalism’ that might endanger the interests of the US.
