Just a few days after blocking Twitter at the DNS and IP level, the government of Turkey has blocked YouTube as well.
The Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been fighting to block off communications that were posted online, alleging that he and his son were involved in a scandal of corruption.
With elections coming up, Erdoğan promised to “eradicate” Twitter, along with other social media such as YouTube and Facebook, unless they comply with Turkish court decisions to remove any audiovisual content referencing the prime minister. Twitter refused to take the content down.
Turkey is not alone in this act of stifling freedom of speech; the Sudanese government also recently ordered the removal of all “negative content” from the Internet.
