Domain investors and conservative politicians have been wondering about the push by ICANN to leave US control behind; the change occurred earlier this year.
It appears that ICANN is now officially in the hands of Russian interests, as this web site reveals.
We are talking about Russia’s ICANN – the International Community Association of Nizhny Novgorod region.
According to their official web site, at icann-nn.ru:
“ICANN was established in 1997 to provide international businesses and foreign persons in the region to come together to network with one another, meet local government officials, and enhance their ability to work effectively in Russia. In brief, ICANN is a club of people that meet for business and pleasure.”
Funny how the statement of ICANN being “a club of people that meet for business and pleasure” sounds very familiar! 😀
Regardless, Russia’s own ICANN looks like a fun organization, dedicated to the local interests of the Nizhny Novgorod region, and Russia in general.
Perhaps, ICANN – the domain industry overlords – could learn a few things from them.
с новым годом, 2017!
