No, the #ICANNWiki project is not just a “web site”

ICANNWiki

ICANNWiki, the portal devoted to the activities and functions of ICANN, isn’t simply a web site with a $50 dollar monthly budget for hosting.

The recent news that ICANN is considering to not renew its sponsorship of ICANNWiki – a hefty 60% of its total budget – is definitely not good.

Considering the recent revelations about budgetary coverage by ICANN towards members, just for travel expenses, it’s prudent to extend ICANNWiki sponsorship as it provides an actual service.

Jackie Treiber, Co-Executive Director of ICANNWiki, stated the following about the ICANNWiki budget and sponsorship grants that sustain its functions on an annual basis:

[…] we have $60,000 in sponsorships outside of ICANN. We try to keep a low overhead and try to maximize our time and efforts wisely.

$60,000 is hardly enough though to pay two full-time employees a living wage with health insurance AND account for travel. ICANNWiki requires more than the hosting expenses if it is to be a successful project.

Our budget includes our giveaways, travel, and engagement workshops to improve the site.

Ms. Treiber provided a link to the breakdown of the work that ICANNWiki engages in, as shared on December 5, 2017. Here is the document, in PDF format:

ICANNwiki has been around since 2005. The ICANN funding for it has been around three years.

It’s crazy that in 10 years of domaining the first time I hear about that site is now they are closing.
