Editorial : The #domain name market 12 months from now

With one third of the United States population and similar numbers in Europe ordered to shelter in place, or to self quarantine, internet traffic is exploding.

Companies such as YouTube and Netflix have agreed to lower streaming speeds significantly.

On the other end of the spectrum, some items that are normally brick and mortar exclusives are in such high demand, that prices are now 10-20x online.

For example, a single N95 respirator mask is selling for $15.00 dollars. One liter Purell bottles that normally sell for $9.00 are going for $100. Maruchan ramen that usually sells for .10-20c a serving is selling for $1.00-$2.00.

Price gouging aside, the entire scenario is getting people online that wouldn’t normally shop that way. Over the next year, this may turn out to be a good thing for those of you in the domain industry.

With millions of new people staying at and working from home, many will be looking to start an internet based company. Some will be full time jobs, some will be to supplement income. Either way, these people are going to need domain names!

Over the next 12 months, there could be an explosion in demand for generic keyword domains.

Companies that are known warehouses of domains, such as BuyDomains, Afternic, Sedo, and HugeDomains will be well suited to meet this need, and they will also know soon enough if demand is increasing.

Domain name investing is a long haul game – and domainers need to realize their advantageous position.

Domainers: Stay at home, this too shall pass.
