BigApple.org, an aged domain describing New York City, has been seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI.)
Registered in 1998, the domain about “Big Apple” is now showing a landing page informing its visitors about its seized status.
Why would such a generic geodomain be taken over in the same crime raid that locked down 390 other mostly adult domains?
While BigApple.org is a geographical reference to NYC, the bottom line is that any domain can be used for a purpose more nefarious than what’s indicated.
In the case of BigApple.org, the domain was used in the past as a forwarder to VIPescorts.com, a NYC based escort “agency” that has been the focus of the FBI raid.
In recent years, BigApple.org displayed a lander with a contact form about a match-making platform for traveling “companions” – once again displaying the VIPescorts brand at the bottom.
It’s evident that any domain, whether generic or not, when used for nefarious purposes, can be seized and used as evidence in the particular case when it goes to court.
