Wipro, an Indian company used by many western corporations as an outsourced services provider, announced a security breach of its IT systems via The Times of India.
“We detected a potentially abnormal activity in a few employee accounts on our network due to an advanced phishing campaign” Wipro said in a statement.
Investigative reporter, Brian Krebs, shared the news of the security breach at his publication, Krebs On Security, yesterday, stating that Wipro is in the process of building a “new private email network” as intruders are believed to have compromised the company’s email system.
According to the report at Krebs On Security:
“Wipro says it has more than 170,000 employees helping clients across six continents with Fortune 500 customers in healthcare, banking, communications and other industries. In March 2018, Wipro said it passed the $8 billion mark in annual IT services revenue.”
Brian Krebs’s sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Wipro’s systems were seen being used as jumping-off points for digital fishing expeditions targeting at least a dozen Wipro customer systems.
Security incidents at service outsourcing systems can become major sources of digital “friendly fire,” launching cyberattacks and enhancing cybercrime.
Domain industry companies are usually safe, as the majority are using custom made software in order to safeguard corporate secrets and other data.
