The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Justice announced that they have seized the domain name WeLeakInfo.com.
The website operating on weleakinfo.com claimed to provide its users a search engine able to review and obtain the personal information illegally obtained in over 10,000 data breaches containing over 12 billion indexed records.
This personal information included names, email addresses, usernames, phone numbers, and passwords for online accounts. Weleakinfo.com sold subscriptions that any user could access, with subscriptions providing unlimited searches and access during the subscription periods purchased.
Some of this information could be had for a couple of bucks, as subscriptions started from as little as $2 dollars for access valid for 24 hours!
Two individuals were identified during the course of the operation who officers believe have made total profits in excess of £200,000 from the site; one based in Northern Ireland and one in The Netherlands. The suspects, both 22-year-old men, were arrested on Wednesday 15 January in Fintona and Arnhem respectively.
Some people are not happy about the domain’s removal from active duty. The truth is, that personal information obtained illegally, cannot be baptized as legitimate depending on who the person perusing the data is.
