Coinbase has taken legal action against the German registrant of the domain Coinbase.de, accusing him of cybersquatting and exploitation of the exchange’s brand.

The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, claims that the registrant redirected the domain to a physical coin trading app, leveraged it for affiliate earnings, and attempted to pressure Coinbase into buying the domain at an “inflated price.”
The company alleges that the registrant even raised phishing risks and potential misuse of sensitive data as a bargaining tactic.
The crypto firm is seeking damages, the transfer of the domain, and any profits earned from its misuse. At the time of filing, the domain Coinbase.de redirected to a coin collectors’ forum listing the Coinbase.de registrant as the operator.
While many disputes are handled through the UDRP process, this lawsuit shows that companies and brand owners can also pursue legal action directly in court when a trademark abuse is involved.
