Albania, one of the smallest nations in Europe in terms of population, has crossed a domain name milestone.
As a country of 2.8 million (2016 estimate) it has a small Internet community, and naturally, domain registration use.
The Albanian ccTLD, dot .AL, was allocated on April 21, 1992.
Domain registrations, however, began much later. As of May 1, 2013, anyone can register a dot .AL domain.
In 2012, dot .AL domain started being popular outside of Albania as domain hacks. In November 2014, the dot .AL registry released two character domain names in a landrush.
According to the .AL registry, there are now more than 20,000 registered domains in the .AL ccTLD, spread across .AL, gov.al, com.al, mil.al, edu.al, net.al and org.al as well.
