Another true generic domain bites (bytes?) the proverbial dust.
We’re talking about National.com – the web site of National Semiconductor.
Money changes everything.
Fifty years of industry leadership down the drain for the company that produced a series of firsts, according to their web site, National.com
It seems that shorter domains win over generics, as Texas Instruments, the buyer of National is forking out an astounding $6.5 billion dollars in CASH.
According to the press release:
Texas Instruments and National Semiconductor today announced that they have signed a definitive agreement under which Texas Instruments will acquire National in an all-cash transaction of $6.5 billion. The merger unites two industry leaders who have a common commitment to solving any analog need.
Texas Instruments is another industry behemoth that will now take over operations once the merger is complete. The resulting web site will remain at www.ti.com – one of the early dot com’s.
It is yet unknown how many layoffs will result from this merger but it seems that the domain name National.com will remain in corporate purgatory for years to come.
