We love Canadians.
Some of the top domain investors are Canucks; the land up north offers ample resources in oil, fish, hockey pucks, beavers, beer and of course domain names that end in .CA.
With the domain name space expanding, there is no provision for Canadaphiles to register domain names in dot .CA, a ccTLD restricted solely for use by Canadian citizens, eh.
Enter Western Sahara, a disputed but sovereign territory in Africa, close to Morocco.
Canadian domain investors reached out to the impoverished country’s officials, in order to lease the ISO 3166 code, dot .EH.
“We are always looking to expand on the Canadian culture’s outreach on the Internet, and after giving up on opening dot .CA, we are now going after .EH, eh!” exclaimed Bob Spindellis, a Canadian domain investor from Edmonton.
“There’s no reason why one can have .CO for ‘company’ or ‘corporate’ and friends of Canada can’t launch their own domains. With dot .EH we’ll be changing all that,” added Spindellis.
The Canadian domain consortium backing up the lease of dot .EH from Western Sahara, might eventually include the following Canadian domain investors:
- Ilze Kaulins-Plaskacz of Excellent Domains.
- Adam Dicker of DNForum fame.
- Maxwell Arnold, regular contributor to DomainGang.
- Bill Karamouzis of Teach Me.
- Shaun Pilfold of Net Boulevard Inc.
- Bill Sweetman of Name Ninja.
- Frank Michlick of Domain Cocoon.
- Ian Clark of Garden Media.
- Mark Jeftovic of easyDNS.
- George Kirikos of Leap of Faith Financial Services.
The transformation of dot .EH from a poor country ccTLD to a thriving, sports and beer enriched domain name space for Canadians and their friends, is expected to complete in the coming months.
Congratulations to everyone involved for this remarkable initiative for Canada, eh.
