Kim Dotcom, the illustrious mega-millionaire behind the defunct Megaupload, was on the CBS show ‘60 Minutes‘ tonight.
While the Kim Dotcom case brought forth by the FBI is still pending at the New Zealand courts, Megaupload recently relaunched as “Mega” in New Zealand, operating from the web site Mega.co which forwards to Mega.co.nz.
In the comments section of a video segment presented on the CBS News web site, Marc Ostrofsky, published author and CEO of Cufflinks.com, seized the opportunity to ‘lash’ out about copyright infringement against the licensed products that his venture is selling:
“You missed the bigger picture 60 Minutes! I can show you AMAZON.com and ETSY.com – both selling ILLEGAL COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT products!
60 Minutes would never bother to ask Media Darling Jeff Bezos about such a problem…yet, his firm also profits from sales – no differently than Kim Dotcom.
As the owner of a small, niche internet based business (CuffLinks.com), we pay dearly for EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS to manufacturer and sell Cufflinks from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, DC COMICS, Star Wars and Star Trek among others.”
Marc Ostrofsky’s right to be upset; when a category-defining domain such as Cufflinks.com faces competition from lesser domains due to knock-off brands, the advantage of the generic domain and web site is severely diminished.
